Large-scale water development of the upper Rio Grande in the U.S. and Mexico, and of the Rio Conchos in Mexico over the last 100 years has resulted in progressive channel narrowing of the lower Rio Grande in the Big Bend region. Multiple spacial and temporal scales as well as hydrologic and historic data were used in analysis of rate, magnitude and processes that led to channel narrowing. Flooding between 1900 and 1940's allowed for mantenance of wide, sandy, multi-threaded river. Later reductions in water flow after 1940's and invasions of non-native species (Tamarix spp., Arundo donax) stimulated channel narrowing.
