This historic structure report contains the developmental history of the Prud’homme’s Store as well as treatments and recommendations for use. Prud'homme's Store at Oakland began operation during the Reconstruction period and remained in operation until 1982. In addition to its function as a retail outlet, the store housed Prud'homme's plantation office in a room that was added at the rear of the building around 1880. It also housed a post office for a period of time, reinforcing the importance of the store to the community around Oakland Plantation. At that time, the rural stores that sprang up across the South in the decade after the Civil War were a center of rural life, serving as the market place, financial center, recreational center, public forum, and news exchange. Vernacular design and construction techniques broadly define the character of the store, which was built in response to specific needs or circumstances.
