This historic structure report contains a comprehensive history of the Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oil House of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The period of significance begins in 1872, when construction was completed and the light was first displayed as a navigational aid. The end of the period of significance had not yet been determined, and the report presents several options that each have unique characteristics, primarily related to the production of light in the tower for navigation. The lighthouse was transferred to from the U.S. Coast Guard to the National Park Service in 2000. At the time of this HSR, it remained in use for navigation, and it also is was an attraction for visitors to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Part 1 of the report includes developmental history, with a timeline of the Bodie Island Light Station from 1871 to 2000, and a physical description of the structure. Part 2 describes the alternatives for treatment and use. The proposed treatment is to preserve the Tower and Oil House, known collectively as the Bodie Island Lighthouse, by repairing degraded features for appearance and safety, to interpret the useful history of the Lighthouse. While some modifications would be necessary to address safety and accessibility, the Lighthouse would only be repaired to preserve the existing structure with no major modifications to the structure.
