Beyond the 59th park: Reforming the nomenclature of the U.S. National Park System
Harmon D. 2012. Beyond the 59th park: Reforming the nomenclature of the U.S. National Park System. The George Wright Forum. 29(2):188-196
This article discusses the different designations of units of the national park system such as National Battlefield, National Scenic River, National Historic Site, etc. The author finds that having at least forty different designations for the units of the park system can be confusing to the public. He also argues that having different titles implies that one site could be of greater importance than another. This article contains the author’s reasoning for why the National Park Service should pursue a National Park System Unity Act which would redesignate all 397 park units as National Parks.
