Reassessing the National Park Service and the National Park System

In recent decades, the National Park Service and its partners conducted a series of studies, reports, and conferences to assess the current state and future of the national park system. A critical review of these studies can tell us much about the significant challenges the National Park Service and the parks have faced- and continue to face. Though varied in scope and form, the reports all struggled with questions about the importance of the national parks and what the drafters and participants believed were the enduring core values that the parks represented. This article looks back at the strengths and weaknesses of these earlier studies and assessments in an effort to reassess the National Park Service and the national park system.
