This article discusses the importance of information technology and the role it will play in the future management of the National Park Service. In 2008, the National Park Conservation Association convened the National Parks Second Century Commission, which was charged with developing a 21st-century vision for the National Park Service. As the commission report suggests, management of these landscapes and historic and cultural treasures will be dependent upon mastery of information systems. Modern information technology is now available to protect our parks, and to establish necessary partnerships with other organizations and our public to help forge a better world where these vital resources are protected and cherished for generations to come. This article discusses the importance of information technology and the role it will play in the future management of the National Park Service.
