The Lewis-Davis House is of considerable significance in the interpretation of the Cape Lookout Historic District. The house contains some of the earliest examples of the cape’s historic architecture and illustrates one of many ways in which residents of the cape have adapted and re-used their buildings. It was created by the relocation and combination of two earlier fishing shacks. The house was in very poor condition at the time of this report, with major damage from termites and rot. Like other private residences in the district, it has also undergone significant alterations. This report contains historical and architectural data about the Lewis-Davis House as well as recommendations for its restoration and preservation. The general goal for treatment of the historically-private dwellings in Cape Lookout Village is restoration of the exteriors to their appearance around 1950 and rehabilitation of the interiors for continued residential use, if that can be accomplished without compromising their historic character. However, the poor structural condition of the Lewis-Davis House complicated this treatment approach. Recommendations are given for specific features of the structure.
