Built around 1915, the Gaskill-Guthrie House is one of the older structures at Cape Lookout. Its association with Clem Gaskill ties it to the brief period between 1900 and 1919 when a village flourished at the Cape. Gaskill may have worked as a fisherman as a young man, but he is best known for having taught at the one-room schoolhouse at Cape Lookout. He apparently sold the property to the Cape Lookout Development Company, who sold it to Odell Guthrie in 1922. Vernacular design and construction broadly define the character of the Gaskill-Guthrie House, which is one of the oldest private residences at Cape Lookout. Like most of the other buildings in the village, the house is a simple, utilitarian structure that was built in response to specific needs and circumstances, with little consideration to architectural style or refinement of detail. The report recommends removal of more recent modifications, straightforward repairs of historic features and rehabilitation to system, and continuation of residential use if it can be done without compromising historic character. This report contains a historical and architectural summary of the Gaskill-Guthrie House as well as recommendations for its treatment and use.
