NPS Southeast Regional Office, Cultural Resources Division and Jones TH. 2004. Cape Lookout National Seashore, Cape Lookout Lighthouse Keeper's Dwelling (1907), Historic Structure Report. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Atlanta, Georgia
This report contains a historical and architectural summary of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Dwelling as well as recommendations for its treatment and use. A lighthouse has operated at Cape Lookout since 1812, with the present, second lighthouse completed in 1859. A range of ancillary structures have supported lighthouse operation, including quarters for the keepers and assistant keepers who, excepting three or four years during and after the Civil War, operated the station continuously from 1812 until the light was automated in 1950. The Barden House, as it is now know, was the third Keeper's Dwelling built at the lighthouse station and was occupied by the lighthouse keeper and family from the time it was completed in 1907 until the 1930s. The information for this historic structure report was compiled in the summer and fall of 2002, which included building investigation during the course of a site visit by the author in October 2002. The building investigation was non-destructive and, although comprehensive, was limited to visual examination of the structure and its materials. Historical research included a survey of available sources at the park, including a number of historic architecture drawings relating to the building’s original construction in 1907 and to subsequent modification during the historic period. The report recommends that the house be returned to its original location at the lighthouse station and the exterior restored to its appearance in the 1940s, The interior should be rehabilitated for residential use, if that can be done without compromising the historic character.
