Carl Sandburg purchased Connemara in 1946. In addition to the residence, but were also numerous outbuildings and dependencies, one of which was the Swedish House. The Swedish House was a remarkable cottage originally built to house enslaved house servants, but used primarily as a sort of overflow library for storage of the Sandburgs’ enormous collection of books and magazines. This report contains historical and architectural data for the Swedish House as well as recommendations for the treatment of the site.
