Fire effects monitoring data collected at Jewel Cave N.M. in South Dakota. The data were collected during summer field seasons by the fire effects monitoring crew out of Wind Cave N.P. from 1998 - 2012. Data collected from vegetation transects are 50 meter point intercept data to obtain relative and percent cover. Shrub density data (1998-2005) was measured using brush belts along the same transect. Nested frequency data (2008-2012) are collected in three frames (0.01, 0.1, and 1m2 nested quadrats) along the transect to determine species diversity. Photographs are taken from each end of the transect to document change. Data collected from 50 x 20 m forest plots include tree inventory to obtain density and basal area, fuel load using Brown's method for inventorying surface fuels and biomass, and seedling density. Forest plots are designed either as 50 x 20 meter rectangular or circular 10 meter radius plots depending on if they are intensive (1000m2) or extensive (314m2) plots.
