The NPS established the station in 1978 to monitor the discharge of Nevares Springs, to identify trends in spring flow, and to detect effects of groundwater pumping on discharge. Nevares Springs discharge from Paleozoic-age carbonates at the base of the Funeral Mountain range near the trace of the Furnace Creek fault zone. Springs in this area are generally associated with faults, which are mostly obscured at the surface by unconsolidated gravel deposits. Nevares Springs represent the terminus of the regional Death Valley ground water flow system. Flow from Nevares Springs is piped from a collection gallery composed of French drains into a concrete measurement box at the gage station. Flow is then piped to a reverse osmosis plant for use as a potable water supply in the park residential area. Overflow from the reverse osmosis plant is piped to an ephemeral channel. When the reverse osmosis plant is not in operation flow is diverted at the gage station and piped to a riparian area. Nevares Springs are monitored to identify long term trends in spring discharge from the regional flow system and to identify potential changes associated with groundwater development. WRB discontinued processing records following WY2011. Death Valley NP personnel continue to monitor the site.
