One of the most beautiful and picturesque sections of Missouri is the "Big Springs Country", a karst region centered on Shannon County. Because of the unique nature of this area, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways was established by the Congress of the United States in 1964 and dedicated in 1972 to preserve the natural conditions of the Current and the Jacks Fork Rivers. The National Park Service has been charged with the management and protection of rivers and springs within the boundries of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The aquifer system in the area for which a Sole Source Aquifer designation is being petitioned includes Big Spring, one of the large stand most scenic springs in the nation...
