North Carolina is the home of 40 native crayfishes and three invasive species, all of which have been described, as well as several known but undescribed species. Taxonomic problems persist with several of the native species. Twelve described and at least one undescribed species are endemic to North Carolina, and five of them are restricted to a single river system. Seventeen species occur in the Coastal Plain, and seven of them are limited to that province. Twenty-three are found in the Piedmont Plateau, to which nine species are limited, and 21 occur in the Blue Ridge, to which 16 are limited. Seventeen species have their type localities in North Carolina.
