Evaluation of Craters of the Moon (IDAHO) for its Merit in Meeting National Significance Criteria as a National Natural Landmark in Representing Low Sagebrush, Low Sagebrush / Idaho Fescue. The National Natural Landmarks (NNL) Program encourages the preservation of exceptional examples of the Nation’s biological and geological features. To qualify for NNL designation, a site must be one of the best examples of a geological or biological feature within a Biophysiographic province. We evaluated the Craters of the Moon Potential National Natural Landmark (PNNL) site that lies on the northern edge of the eastern Snake River Plain, in Blaine and Butte Counties, Idaho within the Columbia Plateau Biophysiographic Province. The PNNL was identified as an outstanding example of a low sagebrush ecosystem, specifically little sagebrush / Idaho fescue (Artemisia arbuscula / Festuca idahoensis) and early low sagebrush / Idaho fescue (Artemisia longiloba / Festuca idahoensis).
