Establishing baseline data, analyzing and comparing waterhole characteristics, and proposing methods for future analysis. The objective of this study was to determine whether historically documented waterholes still existed, and if so, to see if there was any discernable change in size. Old topographic maps showed some waterholes not present on newer maps and these were targeted to see if they still held water. A waterhole priority list was compiled based on accessibility and to target a variety of geological settings, such as pit craters, lava tubes, fissures, craters, and thermal springs. When a geological setting or feature was reported to have a waterhole, similar settings or features in the area were also explored for the presence of water. Some, like Yellowjacket waterhole (WH_5) and Pond Cave (WH_14), were targeted for biologic reasons.
