Perennial non-native cattail species (Typha latifolia) has hybridized with perennial native cattails, producing plants with morphologically different flowers and pollen from the parent species in the upper Midwest of the US. The presence of the native, exotic, and hybrid cattails at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was determined visually. In addition wetland soils at each park were collected for seed bank material. Microsatellite markers of the resulting plants provided more detail of hybridizations.
