Limber pine needles preserved in packrat middens over the past 30,000 years were gathered and analyzed for changes stomatal density. (Needles from Craters of the Moon were used for the modern sample). These changes reflect adaptations to varying CO2 concentrations. 'The isotopic results suggest that water-use efficiency (WUE) increased ~12.5% during deglaciation if the leaf-to-air vapor pressure gradient was constant. The _13C chronology may also be important in understanding changes in the global carbon cycle across the last glaciel-interflacial cycle'.
