Isolated pools resulting from snowmelt are important habitat for species adapted to their ephemeral nature. Forty-nine vernal pools at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore were described by their distribution, physical characteristics, and their biota. Of particular interest were wetland plants, amphibians, and macroinvertebrates. A classification system based on five vascular plant communities was devised. Soil carbon and hydroperiods were also analyzed.
