This report includes information on coastal engineering projects identified in, or immediately adjacent to, Colonial National Historic Park (COLO). The report serves as a supplement to a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database (the GIS data are available online at http://irma.nps.gov). One hundred and fifty-three coastal engineering projects were identified in, or immediately adjacent to, COLO. This total includes 134 coastal structures, 11 fill projects, and 8 beach nourishment projects. Within the park, coastal structures extend for 15,070 m (49,450 ft), stabilizing 39% of the shoreline. Beach nourishment projects placed a minimum of 30,000 m3 (39,000 yd3) of sediment from 1985 to 2009, while fill projects impacted roughly 0.48 km2 (118 ac) of subaerial and submerged land from 1931 to 1955. COLO has a highly manipulated system of coastal engineering structures that were designed to stabilize the shoreline and protect cultural resources. These attempts have been generally successful in meeting their objective, but have also likely altered the natural sediment transport processes in the region.
