This report provides a comprehensive history of the Cook House at Scotty’s Castle and focuses on information that will facilitate management actions. Death Valley Scotty’s Historic District, a National Register property within Death Valley National Monument (now Death Valley National Park), contains a number of structures that were built as a desert retreat for Walter Scott and his benefactor, Albert M. Johnson. The focus of this complex is the main residence, known as the Castle, described as Spanish-Moorish architecture. The peripheral buildings complementing this Spanish style were built to provide specific functions at the ranch. Current preservation and management needs at Scott’s Castle require specific knowledge about the history and architecture of one of these structures, the Cook House. Although all the stuccoed Spanish-style structures in the district require stabilization and preservation treatment, the Cook House has become the focus of immediate attention because the failure of this building’s stucco has been the most severe within the complex. Repair of this exterior finish requires technical information about the historic materials and application techniques as well as documentary information about the dates of building modifications. Although the report focuses on that information which will facilitate current management actions, it presents all available data about the Cook House, making this a comprehensive history of the structure. The report describes periods of use under various owners; periods of construction, modification, and renovation; existing conditions; and recommendations for the use and treatment of the structure.
