The 2008 season was incredibly diverse and productive for Grand Canyon National Park’s (GRCA) Fire Ecology Program. In the process of making 33 Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plot visits, all scheduled work was completed while allowing crewmembers wide-ranging training opportunities and contributing to the national fire management effort. A record 200 Composite Burn Index (CBI) plots were installed within nine fires at GRCA to allow assessment of burn severity. In addition, Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP) plots were introduced to the park’s monitoring program, with installation of 46 pilot plots in advance of four prescribed fire treatments. This total of 279 plot visits at Grand Canyon marks the busiest season in the program’s 20-year history by itself, but when combined with the 64 FMH-style plot reads the crew assisted at Bandelier, Saguaro, and Bryce Canyon, 2008 was truly extraordinary.
