In 2012, full staffing with virtually no turnover from the previous season allowed the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) Fire Ecology Program to complete all scheduled work while crewmembers also participated in a wide variety of opportunities supporting incidents nationally and locally. With monitoring of 43 Fire Monitoring Handbook (FMH) plots, 60 Rapid Assessment Protocol (RAP) pilot sampling plots, 97 Composite Burn Index (CBI) burn severity plots, and 16 Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) plots, it was a successful year. Additionally, the tradition of assisting other Fire Ecology programs was renewed, with the Assistant and two crewmembers helping the Saguaro Fire Ecology staff accomplish plot work and data entry in southern Arizona. Returning 6 of the 8 individuals within the Fire Ecology Program from 2011 produced an efficient work environment and freed the crew to concentrate on more advanced skills and allowed the Fire Ecologist to focus on analysis, outreach, and larger-scale tasks.
