Inventory of coastal engineering projects in Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

This report includes information on coastal engineering projects identified in, or immediately adjacent to, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (FORA). The report serves as a supplement to a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database (the GIS data are available online at http://irma.nps.gov). A total of 79 coastal engineering structures were identified in and adjacent to FORA. Thirty-three of these structures were identified within FORA, which together extend over 1 km (0.6 mi) and armor roughly 24% of the shoreline. The remaining 46 coastal structures were found directly adjacent to the park on private or state lands and span over 2 km (1.2 mi). One small dredging project was also found adjacent to FORA in a private marina. The Waterside Theater revetment has stabilized the shoreline, but also cut off a terrestrial sediment input that has likely contributed to downdrift erosion. Similarly, the Dough Cemetery revetment has impounded a potential sediment source and experienced significant end erosion due to wave reflection or to limited sand mobilization.
