The research was to assessed the potential impacts of open-­‐pit coal mining and coal-­‐bed methane development in the Transboundary Flathead Basin. A sampling design was developed toward a comparative analysis between the Elk River and the Flathead River to asses impacts to water quality and aquatic resources, comparing surface water quality and response of aquatic life use among sites on the Elk and its tributaries above and below existing coal mining activity to similar sites on the Flathead River and its tributaries around the Cline Lodgepole Coal Mine.
