Search for the Cittie of Ralegh: Archeological Excavations At Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, North Carolina

Harrington JC. 1962. Search for the Cittie of Ralegh: Archeological Excavations At Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, North Carolina. National Park Service. Washington D.C.

The work reported here, carried on at intervals from 1947 to 1953, represents all that we now have learned through archeology of the ill-fated settlement on Roanoke Island and suggests the directions which future work should take. Much yet remains to be done. Probably archeology will never solve the mystery of "Croatoan," but it has already provided us with tangible evidence of the earliest English colonizing attempt within the limits of the continental United States.
