The San Luis basin is one of a series of late Oligocene to Pliocene extensional basins that comprise the Rio Grande rift in Colorado, New Mexico and northern Mexico. In general, the basins in Colorado and New Mexico are a series of half-grabens filled with synrift sediments of the Santa FeGroup.
