Survey of the water-willow stem borer, Papaipema sulphurata (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae), and other state-listed wetlands moths in two watersheds, Herring River and Salt Meadow, within the Cape Cod National Seashore

The distribution of the state-listed moth, Papaipema sulphurata (Bird), and its larval hostplant, Decodon verticillatus ([L.] Elliott), was documented in two watershed son Cape Cod, MA during fall, 2006: Herring River (Wellfleet/Truro) and Salt Meadow (Truro). These data will be used to gauge the potential impacts of salt marsh restoration activities in these systems on P. sulphurata. Eighty records for P. sulphurata were found within 89 larval hostplant patches in the Herring River watershed, and 29 records were found within 17 hostplant patches at Salt Meadow. Thus, each of these systems supports a significant population of the state-listed P. sulphurata. The only other state-listed species encountered was a single individual box turtle, Terrapene carolina, in a former channel of the Herring River .
