The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) Adelges tsugae Annand, (Homoptera: Adelgidae) is an important pest of Canadian hemlock, Tsuga canadensis Carriere, in North America. The HWA is of Asian origin (McClure, 1987) and was first reported in this country in the Pacific Northwest on western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla Sargent. The first report of HWA in the east was in Maymont Park, Virginia in either 1953 or 1954 It now occurs in ten states from Virginia to Massachusetts. Until this past decade, HWA was considered more of a pest to ornamental plantings than to our hemlock forests. By 1986-88 however, HWA was associated with severe needle drop, branch dieback and tree mortality occurring in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
