Historic Structure Report, Historical and Architectural Data: Fort McHenry
Thompson EN and Newcomb RD. 1974. Historic Structure Report, Historical and Architectural Data: Fort McHenry. Historic Structure Report. Department of the Interior, National Park Service. Denver Service Center, Denver, Colorado
Constructed between 1798 and 1800, Fort McHenry is a bastioned pentagon fort built to defend the Baltimore Harbor. In the War of 1812, the Fort withstood British bombardment during the Battle of Baltimore, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner, national anthem of the United States. The Fort would later serve as a military prison during the Civil War, army hospital in World War I, and Coast Guard base in World War II. This modified historic structure report discusses the history of the surviving historic structures at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Maryland. Its primary emphasis is on the exteriors of the structures only. The present project calls only for their exterior preservation. Nevertheless, it has been necessary to step into the “interiors” on occasion, especially in relation to the underground drainage system, which is important in the preservation of earth and masonry fortifications.
