Fort Sumter is a masonry seacoast fort of the Third System of Seacoast Defense. It was the site of the Battle of Fort Sumter—generally considered to be the inaugural battle of the Civil War—wherein the North Carolina Militia bombarded the federal garrison at the fort. This report is aimed to provide information pertaining to Battery Jasper- its casemates, bombproofs, armament, etc. to insure that the proposed restoration of Battery Jasper to its 1898-1918 appearance is accurate. The historical data section of the subject report, besides furnishing information to guide the architectural historians in preparing their measured drawing and specifications, will provide data needed for interpretive specialists to present the story of Battery Jasper to the area’s visitors.
