After severe Nor'easter storms in January and February, 1998 nearly breached the north end of Assateague Island, a berm was constructed through a partnership including Assateague Island National Seashore, US Army Corps of Engineers, and MD Department of Natural Resources. The intentions of the project were to build a berm that would strengthen the island, but also experience natural overwash. In 2002, the berm was rebuilt, and no overwash had occuered by January 2005. As a result, notches were created through the berm in an attempt to re-introduce the natural overwash processes. After two years, natural overwash did not occur through these notches. In December, 2006, two additional constructed storm surge channels were created, with lower elevations. These newer channels are commonly referred to as pathways. This data represents a series of elevation surveys, collected before and after pathway construction, as well as one monitoring survey collected 9 months after construction and another survey conducted in May 2008.
