Fossil Butte, from the scientific viewpoint, is of national significance because of its unusual concentration of aquatic vertebrate remains. Known locations of fossil fish of any age are rare, but here thousands of fish fossils are present and fossils from this locality are exhibited in museums throughout the world. The fossil remains of plant and animal life in the Wasatch formation are of added value along with the outstanding geologic examples of lake, shoreline, and tributary river flood plain deposits. This report proposes that Fossil Butte and surrounding lands and features in Wyoming be established as the Fossil Butte National Monument and be administered by the National Park Service.
