This study of the Social and Economic History of Virginius Island has been prepared in accordance with the Historical Resource Study Proposal, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It is a distillation of the valuable information contained in studies previously done by three National Park Service historians and one archeologist. Although the content of this report has no connection with the John Brown raid, the year 1859 was a natural temporal focal point, for it was during the period 1846 to the Civil War that Virginius Island reached the zenith of its social and economic importance. Consequently the discussion of man’s works on the island that follows the narrative portion of this report concentrates on those standing in 1859.
