An archaeological survey was undertaken at Sand Creek Massacre National Historical Site (SAND) from April 23 through April 27 of 2007. The purpose of the survey was to identify appropriate locations for temporary facilities for maintenance, staffing and visitation to provide safety and satisfaction until a General Management Plan is developed. The aim of the project was to rule out the presence of archaeological or historical materials in two previously disturbed areas within the boundaries of National Register (NR) listed site 5KW28, the Sand Creek Massacre site. A survey was completed at Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, in Kiowa County, Colorado, during the week of April 23-27, 2007. This was done prior to implementing any measures outlined in the Interim Site Management Plan/Environmental Assessment, Alternative B- Interim Site Management Plan. The survey was conducted for the purpose of identifying suitable locations for developing temporary visitor facilities and tribal use areas in the park until a General Management Plan can be developed. The survey included general reconnaissance, shovel testing, and metal detector scanning of two areas. Area 1 included 23.8 acres in a disturbed area, and Area 2 paralleled a swath 10 meters wide on either side of a two-track road approximately 1207 meters in length. No cultural material was found.
