Long Island in Blue Hill Bay: Initial Mapping and Forest Stand Assessment

'This report provides historical, ecological, and geographical information about Long Island. The main goals of this project were to gain information about the type of forest found on Long Island and to establish geographic control points.' From Introduction, 'On, August 4th 1995 the United States of America purchased a conservation easement that covers more than 90% of Long Island, for $6,657,600.00 (Long Island Easement-I, 1995, p. 1 and 5). "A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a land owner and a land trust that permanently limits use of the land in order to preserve its conservation values. It allows you t continue to own and use the land and to sell it or pass it on to heirs." (pelhamweb, 1999) The easement on Long Island is to be maintained by the National Park Service, more specifically Acadia National Park. Long Island Easement - 1 states that "the purpose of this easement is to preserve, protect and maintain in perpetuity important ecological, scenic, cultural, shore front and island resources, and provide the opportunity for the general public to have access to the resources ...
