Surface sediments from 14 lakes were analyzed for modern diatom communities (SLBE School Lake did not yield a suitable sample). Over 380 diatom species were identified in the fourteen 2005 surface sediment samples from PIRO and SLBE. Diatom assemblages in sediments from the SLBE and PIRO lakes were dominated by north temperate planktonic species such as Asterionella formosa, Aulacoseira ambigua, A. subarctica, Cyclotella (Discostella) stelligera, C. michiganiana, C. comensis, Pseudostaurosira brevistriata and Fragilaria crotonensis. Benthic and periphytic species were also common in some GLKN lakes including Denticula kuetzingii (Shell Lake, SLBE), Navicula cryptotenella (Shell Lake, SLBE), Staurosira construens (Round and Tucker, SLBE) and S. construens v. venter (Miners and Florence, PIRO). A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was run to explore the diatom species-environment relationship in SLBE and PIRO lakes and to begin construction of a calibration data set for GLKN parks. Based on vector length and orientation with CCA axes 1 and 2, the environmental factors that most strongly explain the distribution of diatoms in SLBE and PIRO include TN, pH, TP, DOC, chlorophyll a, and silicate. This training set will continue to be developed as additional GLKN lakes are added in subsequent field years.
