A program to inventory the species and monitor the numbers of non-volant small mammals of Voyageurs National Park began in 1996. The work was expanded in 1997 and continued annually 1998 - 2001. The data are showing patterns of distributions of species and of abundances of numbers in the small mammal community across a wide geographic range east to west within the Park, both on the Kabetogama Peninsula and the mainland to the south. In 2001, shorttail shrew numbers were still low, redback voles were still abundant, and deer mice were substantially more abundant. Of the 27 native species, 21 or 78% have now been documented in the present study. Six native and two introduced species remain to be documented.
