This is a transcript of a tape-recorded interview with C.E. Anderson. C. E. Anderson, a building contractor from Independence, Missouri, performed remodeling services at 219 N. Delaware Street a year after the Trumans returned from the White House in 1953. Anderson provides little information about his personal background but offers numerous stories about his renovation projects at the Truman home, including work in the study, the basement, and the attic. Of particular interest is Anderson’s recollection of remodeling the Truman’s attic to prepare it for the many artifacts they accumulated during the presidential years. During that project he noticed evidence suggesting that a fire had at one time occurred in the attic.
