The main purpose of this paper is to summarize, clarify and attempt to relate the comprehensive and often convoluted web of saguaro research and monitoring undertaken at Saguaro National Park since its founding as a national monument in 1933. This paper is by highlight much of the work performed on saguaros outside park boundaries. The focus here is on long term studies for which data are currently available, which makes it slightly different from the excellent history of saguaro research by J.R. McAuliffe (1993). My objective is to simplify each major monitoring effort through a summary of its methods, goals, location, history, personnel, and results. Paying close attention to the sources listed will also facilitate future monitoring projects. Due to the complex and often confusing network of plots wihtin the park, appendices 1 and 2 on the following pages illustrate the locations of all plots from each major long-term monitoring project. Each separate project and corresponding plot spread is then discussed in more detail throughout the paper in chronological order.
