From Chapter Introduction: In the absence of long-term monitoring studies and archived documentation, our objective was to examine the sedimentary record to decipher the area's history of natural and anthropogenic changes. To accomplish this, we chose three regions representative of the South Florida coastal zone: (1) Oyster Bay, adjacent to Shark River, the seaward outflow of the dominant regional freshwater source; (2) Jimmy Key, located in central Florida Bay; and (3) Coot Bay, an isolated bay neither directly influenced by Shark River nor central Florida Bay (Figure 14.1). Each coring site was selected because of rapid recent sediment accumulation and well-preserved, finely laminated stratification. The latter can be compared to the pages of a history book upon which nature and man potentially can record their influences. To deconvolute this record we must understand the story told by biological, chemical, and physical evidence contained within these sediments.
