As a marine park the Resource Management Division is charged with preserving and protecting an estuarine system adjacent to one of the northern most extensions of pristine coral reefs in the world. The primary focus for the natural resources management program of Biscayne National Park (BISC) in 2004 were in the programmatic areas of; (1) water resources management, including water resources delivery systems, and water quality and quantity monitoring; (2) wildlife management, including fisheries management planning, and inventory and monitoring of sea turtle shore bird, raptor and neotropical migratory bird populations; (3) integrated pest management (IPM), including treatment of invasive plant infestations; and, (4) vessel grounding, damage response, assessment, and restoration to seagrass and coral communities. Collectively, RM program staff were able to secure in special project, NRM funding support in fiscal year 2004 from independent, non-park sources, as detailed later in this report. Highlights accomplished in 2004 for each of the programmatic areas identified above follow.
