Stabilization of the HMS Fowey is susceptible to sediment movement caused by episodic weather events. Tropical cyclones are the most serious coastal hazards affecting south Florida. Two recent tropical cyclone events caused widespread damage to underwater resources in the south Florida region. The site of the wreck of the HMS Fowey was uncovered after the passage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, yet received little damage from the recent passage of Tropical Storm Gordon in November of 1994. The wind fields of these two events are examined and the risk of future tropical cyclone activity in the areas is assessed using the National Hurricane Center's risk analysis program.
