The American peregrine falcon is listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. On the Arizona Game and fish department's list of "Threatened Native Wildlife in Arizona", the species has candidate status. This difference reflects the status of Arizona's peregrine population relative to those of the rest of the nation. Studies indicate that although peregrine populations worldwide are recovering, in the American southwest and particularly Arizona, full recovery may already be near. In 1988 the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and AGFD began a cooperative survey for breeding peregrines on all National Forests in Arizona. The intent of the survey was twofold. The USFS would accumulate an information base on habitat preference and use, to be incorporated into multiple-use management. Further, the surveys would be part of a statewide, multi-agency assessment to determine whether peregrine populations have recovered sufficiently to justify petitioning USFWS to downlist the species federal status from endangered to Threatened.
