Survey of Introduced Non-Native Fishes Phase I Report: Introduced Exotic Fishes in North America: Status 1979

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Contract 14-16-0009-78-021, Survey of Introduced Non-Native Fishes, is divided into two phases. Phase I is designed to result in a status report of the established exotic fishes in North America. Early in Phase I, it was recognized that two established exotic fishes, namely the carp (Cyprinus carpio) and he brown trout (Salmo trutta), would present many problems in attempting to trace their complete histories of introduction; such attempts, we felt, would detract from our efforts to secure necessary documentation on lesser known exotic fishes. Therefore, while the carp and the brown trout appear in our lists of established species for the respective families, Cyprindae and Salmonidae, individual species accounts are not included in this report. Much of the available information on the carp and the brown trout, prepared by other authors, will be summarized in species accounts in the Atlas of North American Freshwater Fishes. This report is the final report for Phase I of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Contract 14-16-0009-78-021. The Results section is divided into two parts: one on the established (reproducing) species, arranged by families and with individual species accounts, both in alphabetical order; and an annotated list of the non-established (formerly reproducing or non-reproducing) species. We anticipate that much, if not most, of the contents of this report will be published within the near future. More importantly, we hope that the information contained in this report will serve as the document on our knowledge of the status of introduced exotic fishes as of the middle of 1979.
