The first section of this report provides a comprehensive review of the literature, status, and life history of the bobcat (Lynx rufus) across its range, with added emphasis on Saguaro National Park and the surrounding environment. We summarize basic characteristics, such as natality, mortality, food habits, prey selection, habitat use, taxonomy, and disease, and we discuss impacts of humans on bobcats, such as trapping, habitat fragmentation, and urban-associated threats. In the second section of this report we describe the results from several projects that pertain to bobcats in the Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park, Arizona. In these studies we used noninvasive techniques, such as track surveys, infrared-triggered photography, and genetic analysis of scat and hair to assess the status of bobcats in and around the district. Thirdly, we describe efforts we used to engage and educate the public about bobcats such as teaching Junior Ranger Camps, organizing volunteer participation in track surveys, and developing an informational site bulletin to distribute at park units. We conclude by providing recommendations for further research and public outreach.
