Benthic mapping guidance document: Lessons learned from NPS benthic mapping pilot projects

Curdts LT and Cross JN. 2013. Benthic mapping guidance document: Lessons learned from NPS benthic mapping pilot projects. Natural Resource Report. NPS/NRSS/WRD/NRR—2013/682. National Park Service. Fort Collins, Colorado

From 2008 to 2011, the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program provided funding for ten benthic mapping pilot projects. The pilot projects were chosen based on geographic, ecosystem, and partner diversity. The objective of this report is to review the pilot projects, distill the lessons learned, and provide guidance for parks wishing to embark on their own benthic mapping projects. A description of benthic mapping technologies is provided to give readers a basic understanding of the major challenges and decisions that should be considered before undertaking benthic habitat mapping.
