The purpose of this study is the collection, presentation, and evaluation of historical data pertaining to the historic events that occurred in the park and surrounding area and identification of historic resources associated with those events. History of the South Snake Range and the surrounding area from prehistoric times to the creation of Great Basin National Park. It presents the results of Unrau's NPS-funded research project and it is written as a catalog of historical facts, not as a popular narrative. Consists of 13 chapters and 32 appendices covering prehistory, early exploration, Mormon settlement, early surveys, mining, ranching and agriculture, politics, socioeconomic, transportation, Native Americans, US Forest Service administration, Lehman Caves National Monument administration, establishment of Great Basin National Park, recommendations for management and interpretation of historic sites.
