This report describes the basic components of a preliminary model for the Florida panther. The dynamics of a population, particularly very small populations, with highly complex internal structure on a heterogeneous landscape can be more accurately described by individual-based models than by highly aggregated ones. Individual-based models offer the capability to simulate the life cycles of all individuals comprising the population, their interactions, and their response to environmental changes. As the population of Florida panther, an endangered species, is very low in the Everglades and surrounding landscape, we propose to carry out an individual-based modeling approach to analyze the behavior of this species on the Everglades landscape. This model will be constructed to couple with SIMDEL, a spatially-explicit individual-based model for white-tailed deer in the Everglades landscape. It is proposed to simulated the interactions among Florida panther, white-tailed deer, climate change, hydrology, vegetation dynamics, habitat fragmentation, and human activities.
