This report attempts to provide a brief historic account of the Longfellow House up to the time of the poet's death in 1882. The account was not extended to the present because the house remained in the family after Longfellow died, and later in the possession of the Longfellow Trust, (and underwent no major alterations, except for the addition of a sun deck on the piazza), and also because time limitations did not permit including later years in the study. The Longfellow House structure has not had a very exciting history. Few changes were made after the house was enlarged by Craigie, but it does possess a charm that accurately reflects the values of the poet who lived there, and the age of which he was an accurate spokesman. For the preparation of this study lowe a great deal to Mr. de Valcour, the house's knowledgeable and cultured curator, who made my visit to the house one of my most enjoyable recent experiences.
